Ultraviolet Radiation Compared to an Ultra - Clean Air Enclosure 813

چکیده
Clean air in the operating room is important during joint replacement surgery. We compared monochromatic ultraviolet radiation of254 nm with the use ofa Charnley-Howorth air enclosure by bacterial air-sampling during 113 total hip arthroplasties. Air samples were taken continuously at the edge of the wound and every 15 minutes at a site 130 cm from the operating table. We also tested the effect of occlusive clothing for all personnel. Ultraviolet light was more efficient than the ultra-clean air enclosure, and occlusive clothing on own or in combination also produced improvement. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Background and Objectives: Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) is a promising method for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Photocatalytic oxidation process, despite its advantages, has disadvantages such as deactivation of photocatalyst. The deactivated photocatalyst can be active through thermal abatement, ozonation, exposure with clean air and UV radiation. Materials and M...
متن کاملPrediction of solar ultraviolet intensity by using Fuzzy Logic in the north-west of Iran
Introduction: Solar energy is one of the free sources, clean and environmentally friendly energy. Sun is the most important source of natural ultraviolet radiation that has a major role in the life of living beings. Industrial and medical applications of ultraviolet radiation have been clearly proven, like the production of vitamin D or treatment of many diseases, and also har...
متن کاملSpindle trees (Euonymus japonica Thunb.) growing in a polluted environment are less sensitive to gamma irradiation
Background: Spindle trees (Euonymus japonica Thunb.) growing in an industrial complex area containing pollutants is chronically injured thus need to build up their resistance. Antioxidant enzymes and cell membrane stability have been widely used to differentiate stress tolerance. Materials and Methods: Leaves of spindle trees from a clean control area (Kijang) and an industrial area (Onsan) whe...
متن کاملThe survival of bacteria in dust: III. The effect of light on the survival of bacteria in dust.
Sterilization of air by ultra-violet radiation is effective when the organisms are dispersed in droplet nuclei, the smallest particles being the most vulnerable (Wells & Wells, 1936; Bourdillon & Lidwell, 1948). Airborne bacteria, however, are also carried on dust particles shaken from textiles or swept from the floor, and against these ultra-violet radiation at intensities higher than those no...
متن کاملUpper-Room Ultraviolet Light and Negative Air Ionization to Prevent Tuberculosis Transmission
BACKGROUND Institutional tuberculosis (TB) transmission is an important public health problem highlighted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the emergence of multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant TB. Effective TB infection control measures are urgently needed. We evaluated the efficacy of upper-room ultraviolet (UV) lights and negative air ionization for preventing airborne TB transmission using ...
